The nutrition diagnosis is summarized into a structured sentence named the nutrition diagnosis statement. This statement, also called a PES statement is composed of three distinct components: the problem (P), the etiology (E), and the signs and symptoms (S).
Once the RD "makes" a nutrition diagnosis, the term is incorporated into a nutrition diagnosis statement or PES statement composed of three parts: a problem (P), etiology (E), and signs and symptoms (S) (Table 1).
What is a PES Statement? There are 3 possible areas for nutrition problems to be drawn from. The dietitian uses their clinical judgement to select the most appropriate domain. When in doubt, select the intake domain, as this most closely relates to a dietitian’s role!

A PES statement is comprised of 3 parts: the problem (P), etiology (E), and the signs and symptoms (S). These are linked together by two specific phrases as shown below:
A nutrition problem or nutrition diagnosis is identified and described using a PES statement. The nutrition diagnosis can be resolved or improved though treatment/nutrition intervention by a food or nutritional professional.
As a global network of PES, the World Association of Public Employment Services plays an important role in fostering exchange, peer learning and reflection on these issues. This report contributes to that effort by bringing forward insights and perspectives from across different contexts.
